Safe Browsing for Kids - You can have it your way, parent!
Protecting kids on the Internet is as important nowadays as is
guiding them across the street.
However, the fight to keep kids safe is a continuing struggle -
much like that to keep
spyware and
viruses away.
Filtering not enough
You cannot keep up with the number of bad sites that are being
created on the Internet right now - no way. Not with filtering.
The way filtering works is by targeting certain words and phrases
that occur in the page content before the page is displayed.
The filter can also target know sites (by their domain names or IP
addresses).
So there bad guys can always make minor adjustments and break
through most filters.
A Better Approach to Kids' Safety
A better approach to providing safe browsing and keeping your little ones safe from exposure to
unwholesome material has to come from a multi-pronged approach.
Parents can take the following steps to providing safe browsing
experiences for their children.
-
Choose a set of sites that are safe.
-
Use the built-in content advisor function in Internet
Explorer.
-
Teach your kids how to conduct themselves online and see
that they do so.
-
Take measures to make your computer safe and ensure the
security of your identity and those who use your computer.
It's like letting someone into your home "by invitation only"
instead of just anyone come knocking at your door to get in. This
sounds hard, challenging, and time consuming. It may be, but is there
any doubt that it is worth it? The Internet Content Rating
Association
The Internet Content Rating Association provides a better way to
control the Internet content that be viewed on your computer. They
provide a way for webmasters to register and then label their sites as
safe. Your browser will detect these sites, and you will have the
option of allowing these sites to be viewed. Sites that are not
labeled an be permitted on a case by case basis upon your discretion.
The site has instructions for webmasters, parents and kids. This link
opens the Internet
Content Rating Association's site in a new window. If you are a
concerned parent you might find the following page at the ICRA site
